Going Home

Mike Kesselring felt right at home as Toastmaster and also in filling in as Sergeant at Arms.  His theme was “Going Home.”  Mike inducted the new officers by passing along his crystal gavel and reading out the duties:   President, Rei Fuller; Vice President Education, Deb Lee; Vice-President Membership, Alicia Hughes; Secretary, Stan Coss; Treasurer, John Bowen.  (Absent were Sergeant at Arms, Tres Magner; Vice-President Public Relations, Glenda Teams-Edwards).
Supporting roles were introduced with John Hayden as Ah Counter,  Brian Woolf using “unique” as the Word of the Day and as Grammarian,  and Karen Alexander as Timer.
Rei Fuller presented the Facilitating Discussion Project One on the topic of “Renewable Energy.”  She served as moderator for three distinguished panelists:  Dr. John Plant (John Bowen) on Biomass; Dr. Windy Blade (Alicia Hughes) on Wind Power; Dr. Sunny Brown (Doug Brown) on Solar Energy.  Rei introduced the general topic,  introduced the  individual panelists, listened as each spoke for about four minutes, summed up their findings, and then asked for questions from the audience.  The 30-minute presentation was an info fest on clean sources of renewable energy.

Phyllis Kombol had table topics on the coming home theme.   Karen Alexander, one of three former district governors in the room, was with her table topic welcomed back home to the Carolinas after several years in New England.
Fern Webb as General Evaluator introduced Stan Coss to evaluate Rei Fuller as moderator, and then he called on three members to offer a round robin evaluation of more glows and grows.  Fern then called on the eyes and ears team for their reports and then gave her general evaluation of the meeting.
In attendance were the following: Rei Fuller, Fern Webb, Stan Coss,  Phyllis Kombol, Doug Brown, Deb Lee,  John Hayden, John Bowen, Brian Wolfe, Karen Alexander, Alicia Hughes, and Mike Kesselring.

The Executive Business Meeting began directly at 10:30, and President Rei Fuller reminded officers of the TLI training from 8:30 to 12:30 at the Habitat for Humanity, 33 Meadow Road, Asheville, 28803.  She then went over portions of the Club Success Plan to show that five goals are “in the bag” if members just follow through with four of the members completing their individual goals of a CL, an ACG, an ALB, two projects at level four of Pathways and three projects at level five.  If four clubs complete these plans by Sept. 15, Area Director Stan Coss said he’d share his “bag” of TM gifts.
It was decided to have the Open House on Sept. 8 preceded by the next regular meeting on Aug. 18th.  The open house will simply showcase a regular whole meeting rather than have a featured keynote speaker.  There will be a $75 breakfast tray ordered a week in advance from “the deli guy.”  Rei will be in Russia.

VP of ED Deb Lee said new members, Karen and Brian, will need to be inducted once there is a quorum of 11 or more charter members.  She inquired on the need to have a Pathways presentation, and based on praise of Linda Pierce’s two TM club presentations, it was recommended she ask Linda to do this in Aug. or Oct.
VP of Membership Alicia Hughes said she was not sure if new members would need a membership packet.  Members are currently required to be members of another club.
Secretary Stan Coss said he’d continue blogging the minutes.  He passed out a sheet of criteria for a proposed local contest to combine humorous speeches and stand-up comedy.  Finalists may provide entertainment for open houses of Asheville clubs of Area I and II in the future.  The district will no longer sponsor the fall humor contest beyond the local club level since there is now no fall district confence.
Treasurer John Bowen said the current account balance stands at $362 from which a lectern, a banner stand, and promotion for the open house will be deducted.   He confirmed that new members will still be charged a one-time $10 extra fee until the end of March when the decision could be revisited.
At John’s suggestion, the lectern will in the future be put on the wall facing the door to take advantage of the preferred lighting.

Brian Wolfe and Karen Alexander, brand new members to the ATA club but with a world of Toastmaster experience, take on supportive roles at their first meeting.

    1. Thanks for your kind comments. I just saw this comment in compiling the new edition. I just figure an advanced club could use an advanced set of minutes/summary.
