A Brave New World

Dada Maheshvarananda  and Linda Pierce both showed off their colorful garb in the opportune lighting provided by having the new lectern face the door.  It was all to face the Brave New World of Pathways.  Dada quoted classic masters of mentoring to underscore Linda’s presentation on Base Camp 101.  The basic theme was that advanced Toastmasters need to dig into Pathways in order to mentor, to be awakeners, to kindle the fire, to coach to create the stars in others.

Supporting roles were filled with Doug Brown as Grammarian, Rei Fuller as Ah Counter,  and Alicia Hughes as Timer.

Linda Pierce interspersed her 45 minute presentation with insightful information to enhance her handout and answer questions raised by an avid audience of present and future mentors.  Some basics included the thought that tutorials, the key to base camp, are delivered by people that talk fast, so be prepared to pause, rewind, and take notes.  Also, some tutorials are more helpful than others, so Linda pinpointed some that are to be focused upon.  She entered the gateways of the five blue tiles on the home page and highlighted the top right menu of the tour, the search, the person icon, and the gear icon.
On the tour, six blue tiles each had a drop-down of tutorials.  The “meat” of Pathways, Linda said, was the education transcript.  One possible glitch was found if a multi-club member was completing a project and notice was sent to a VP of Ed of a club the member did not intend to be credited.  The need was stressed for the VP of Ed to keep record of all speeches, as by a spreadsheet.

Linda Pierce leads into many Pathways, but especially for Mentoring.

On a more elementary note, Linda stated that Level One is the same for all 10 Pathways.  Each path has five levels, with all levels having three projects except for one level having just two for a total of 14 projects.  Completion of two Pathways earns the DTM; completion of one level of Pathways requires the approval of the VP of Ed before the member can proceed.
Speech evaluations can be filed in a drawer or scanned or photographed and saved in the e-portfolio.  The “How to Evaluate” tutorial was said to be especially helpful.
Of all the material covered, the essence was that in order to mentor, advanced members need to get into Pathways and complete at least the first level, to lead by example.

Bob Pierce had table topics for 11 respondents based on lyrics of songs from the sixties.  Money to simply spend; Buicks to build personality; sunshine; answers blowing in the wind; Antarctica; dazed fireflies in the palm of the hand; Help, I need somebody sitting on the dock of the bay.  These led to respect for more than Aretha Franklin or just ear bugs to be plunked out by a pinkie.

Tim Edwards, as General Evaluator, called on members not heard from in TT’s to give impromptu evaluations of aspects of the meeting.  Then he gave glows and grows before calling on the eyes and ears team.

In attendance were the following: Rei Fuller, Stan Coss,  Phyllis and Tony Kombol, Doug Brown, Deb Lee,  John Hayden, John Bowen, Bob and Linda Pierce, Mike Kesselring,  Dada Maheshvarananda, Katherine Alford, Tim Edwards, Alicia Hughes, Tres Magner, and Guest Karl Robins.

A business meeting was called into session directly by President Rei Fuller, and the meeting that began at 9:00 ended by 10:50, after two motions were made and seconded and passed unanimously.  This included acceptance of a budget that in sum has a Total Income of  $3,890, Total Expenses of $3,265.00 and a  Balance Available of $625.00.  (The second measure on spending up to $100 at the discretion of the executive committee was later found to be invalid.  Items both in and outside the budget need general membership approval.)

All roles were then nearly filled for the Open House of September 22.  Come on, Brave New World!
