Revisiting the Seventies and Revisiting or Revising Speeches
Toastmaster Rei Fuller introduced the theme of the 1970’s. Katherine Alford, as grammarian, supplied “chill” as the word of the day and supplied various props to usher in the spirit of the 70’s. Tim Edwards was timer and Alicia Hughes was ah-counter.
Karen Alexander spoke on “Directionally Challenged.” She directed her audience in stories of delivering refreshments to a TLI with an unexpected detour, departing from a husband that was the nicest guy, and deciding that a Toastmaster that was an alcoholic was too much to take. Her speech was the Pathways Leadership Development Project 2, Part 2 (Evaluation and Feedback).
Doug Brown spoke on “History— The Greatest Story Ever Told.” He began with Hammurabi, known for his code of law of ancient Mesopotamia dating to about 1754 BC. Then he went to Moses and found parallels with Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome. He concluded by saying our own stories could be added to the greatest stories. This was Pathways Motivational Strategies Project 2, Part 2 (Evaluation and Feedback).
Stan Coss led table topics on the theme of movies of the 70’s, with prompts ranging from feel-good movies like Rocky, blockbusters like Jaws or Star Wars, super heroes like Superman,or disaster films like Airport.
General Evaluator Glenda Teams-Edwards introduced her evaluation team, beginning with Brian Woolf evaluating Karen and then John Bowen evaluating Doug. Each evaluator gave his glows and grows and then began a round-robin of comments from the audience. After the eyes and ears team, Glenda gave her general evaluation.
Next came a Charter Ceremony, with Glenda, as the past District 37 Director, presenting a charter certificate to Rei, the club’s president, and certificates to the charter members. She also presented a club banner to Rei and then unfurled this together on the stand.
This was to be an open house get-together. Certainly the speakers and traditional meeting were showcased in an outstanding way. It was announced that there is now a Facebook presence for ATA as well there being a FreeToastHost website in the works.
